The 72(t) rules that matter

The lock-in

Payments must run for the longer of five years or until age 59½. Starting at 48 locks you in until 60.

Break it and pay for all of it

Changing the amount or taking extra from the SEPP IRA triggers the 10% penalty, plus interest, on every payment since you started. One switch to the RMD method is allowed.

Fixed means fixed

Amortization and annuity pay the same dollars every year, even after the account falls. A bitcoin-heavy SEPP IRA can run dry in a bear market. The RMD method resizes each year.

The rate cap

The interest rate is capped at the greater of 5% or 120% of the federal mid-term rate. For October 2026 that is 5.54% (Rev. Rul. 2026-19). A higher rate pays more.

Carve-outs

You can put only part of your IRA into the SEPP, sized to your spending, and leave the rest alone until the lock-in ends.

Left out

Required minimum distributions at 73, Roth conversions, health insurance subsidies, state-specific rules and IRA-to-IRA transfer timing.
